“Ms. Warren, I guess I don’t understand why you’re still seeing Mr. Pedersen. You do know that the lawsuit is still active, right? ” I could tell that Hassan Cooper was doing his very best not to curse me out over the phone.

I slowly turned my car onto my street, no reporters or TV cameramen were outside but a few photographers were camped out on the curb.

“Of course I know that, Mr. Cooper. I didn’t know he was coming to my office today. This was a total surprise. How will this affect the case?” I asked.

“Please call me Hassan. Look, it doesn’t look good, not at all. I spoke with her attorneys, tried to get a feel for our chances of her dropping this. It doesn’t look like that’s going to happen. Ms. Warren, you can’t be seen with him. In fact, you shouldn’t be talking to him at all. You don’t want your number showing on any of his phone records,” he pleaded.

I know I was making his job more difficult. I had not intended to see Carson anymore. Not because I didn’t want to but because he’d disappeared on me. His team was out of the playoffs for the first time in years and he’s dealing with a separation and possibly...hopefully... a divorce. I didn’t see where I fit in or how he had time for me. But he’d made time. I smiled.

“Hassan, I apologize again. I didn’t intend for any of this to happen.”

“Ok, please don’t talk to the press or anyone else about this. If you must give a response to anyone, direct them to me. And we should set up a meeting soon. I’ll have Kelli give you a call to set up an appointment. I’ll talk to you soon.”

I drove past the photographers and into the garage. The door closed, muffling out their yelling.

“You can get up now,” I said looking into the rearview mirror.

Carson popped up, his face filling the mirror. When we spotted the crowd in front of the office, we’d walked out the backdoor and into the employee parking lot. He climbed into the backseat and stretched out on the floor as I pulled out onto the main street.

“I’ll have my friend come pick me up later but we gotta get out of here,” he’d said.

Now he was standing in my living room for the first time in a long time.

“This is crazy. I didn’t know she was coming for you like that, Mia.”

“Did you think I was joking? She wants me to pay for breaking up your marriage. I didn’t even know that was real thing. I don’t know why she’s doing this to me. I mean, I know she’s mad and blames me but you guys have millions of dollars. This is petty.”

“Well it’s not like she was going to send you a thank you note for making our relationship public. That Facebook post did a lot of damage,” He sat on a chair at the kitchen table.

“Are you
